important as the singing experience for it stimulates the forming of ideal concepts of vocal expression. But listening should be free from compulsions and should be carried on as a cultural pursuit, voluntarily indulged in with eager interest and wholesome enjoyment. In this connection, emulation should not be confused with imitation. Emulation, according to Webster, is "to strive to equal or excel." Imitation is "to follow as a pattern, to copy." The student's exposure to his spoken language over a great many years illustrates a type of unconscious ear training that has influenced his oral expression of speech sounds. Analogously, if he gives the same degree of intelligent attention to listening to good singing his hearing awareness of good singing tones should be considerably enhanced. |
